September, Refocus, Reset, You, Your Business and Employee Engagement

It's September, a chance to refocus and reset your business.

Do you get that 'back to school' feeling? Is it a feeling of dread as the new school year approaches or are you excited to show off your new shoes, full pencil case, and see friends? The summer months allow you to slow down, refresh, and recharge, or can be a whirlwind, especially if you have young children to entertain (been there, done that!). I still recall my 'back to school' feelings after the summer holidays, and I'm fortunate to say they were happy memories. I associate September with new beginnings, planning, and a time to refocus and reset not only personally but also in our events business, Magnifisense.

Perhaps your school days weren't the best and you remember bullying due to strict parents not allowing 'slip on' shoes or always being the new classmate and never feeling settled due to moving house constantly and starting new schools. Whether it's excitement or dread, September always seems to bring an air of new beginnings, transition (summer to autumn), and realignment. This is also reflective in business, and each one of us as a working adult has been the 'new classmate' and felt unsettled.

September can be a time to reflect on both business and personal goals set at the beginning of the year, which haven't been met or celebrate those which have. It's an opportunity to embrace and gain new business, and time to refocus on problems such as productivity slow down, income stream, and low staff morale.

The first month of autumn can act as a reminder to recommunicate and engage with employees to enable more effective decision making, commitment, and engagement. Employee engagement is an important factor to review and be aware of on a regular basis, not just in the month of September.

There are many forms of employee engagement, such as peer-to-peer recognition, wellness retreats focusing on physical and mental health, team outings for a break from the usual work environment, and team building challenges to enhance team dynamics. Remote working, flexible hours, and consolidated hours also increase productivity, create a work-life balance, reduce burnout, absenteeism, and costs.

Investing in training and development shows that businesses value employee growth, which can lead to higher job satisfaction and morale. September is the perfect month to pause, review the year's progress so far, and make necessary adjustments. Using past and present data can assist with planning, budgeting, and estimating the business's growth. By considering these factors, refocusing and realigning your business and employee engagement, you can ensure a strong finish to the year and create a solid start to the New Year, leaving everyone feeling content with time well spent.

New Term Blues

Like the rest of this year, the summer holidays have gone super-fast; suddenly we are in September. Unsure whether its psychological; but there appears to be an autumnal chill to the air too.
